You can find all different types of homes in Britain, but most people live in houses: 82% of British families live in a house and only 15% live in a flat. You usually see tall blocks of flats in the city centres and they are popular with students and young people. Often families with children like to live in the suburbs, with big houses and green areas. Typical British houses have two floors, with the bedrooms upstairs. They often have soft carpets on the floors, except in the kitchen and the bathroom. The carpets help to keep the houses warm in winter. The windows have curtains, but there aren't any shutters and there aren't any balconies. British houses usually have a back garden or courtyard. They often have a front garden, too - but some people park their car in it!
