Alberto is doing a project at school about hobbies and leisure activities. He found this: 1 Hobbies help us to use our free time to relax. Some people relax in a passive way: watching TV or movies, surfing the Internet, texting and playing board games and computer games. The invention of the computer and the Internet has had an enormous impact on people's leisure time. People now spend hours of their free time at the computer or on their smartphones. 4 Playing traditional sports, like football and tennis, has always been a popular leisure activity. But in recent years new sports have appeared which involve certain physical risks to the participants. Have you ever heard of bungee jumping, the ironman triathlon and hang gliding? Have you ever been rock climbing or white water rafting? These are just some examples of extreme sports. In some cases they are more dangerous than traditional sports. Man has always wanted to challenge nature: sometimes for necessity, sometimes for leisure and sometimes to test a scientific theory, as in the case of Leonardo da Vinci with his flying machines. 5 However for those who prefer a quieter life, you can always watch extreme sports online instead of doing them. Do you enjoy challenges, but your hobby is baking cakes? No problem. You can always join a bake-off challenge.
